It didn't happen like this for me coming out of the closet. I lived in the time when the Sexual Offences Act of 1967 in the UK was made law (I was nineteen), allowing gay men some private freedom. But that didn't mean British society accepted this, and I found it a real struggle to come to terms with who I was, with ignorance and contempt everywhere around me.

You can say things have changed since then, and largely they have, but you would be a fool to think there isn't still danger and hate out there.
